The Historic Village of Robbins: Since 1917
Established in 1917 by formerly enslaved individuals and their descendants who moved north during the Great Migration, Robbins is recognized as the oldest predominantly Black town in the Chicago area. The town’s first residents were drawn by the promise of stable jobs in the industrial and factory sectors along the Calumet River.
From 1930 to 1933, Robbins hosted the first airport in the United States owned and operated by African Americans. This airport was also the only flight school at the time where African Americans could train as pilots, and it served as an inspiration for the Tuskegee Airmen Program during World War II. Many distinguished African American pilots took flight from this historically significant, yet now forgotten, airport.
